Phair Photography

After spending five years raising her children, Susann Phair (aka Susann Pocknell) acknowledged her need for a change of direction as well as a desire to formally commit to her interest in black and white photography. After dabbling in the darkroom for some time, she took a National Diploma in Photography and has since then undertaken various photography jobs involving children and families as well as some commercial work. She currently divides her time between teaching Photography at Stratford upon Avon College, and her studio.

A lot of my work is concerned with the melancholic moment - at the lighter end of the scale - , and negative space. This is not an idea applied exclusively to some of my human subjects, but also expressed in my still life works where I attempt to imbue the objects with some emotional slant.

Much of my still life work starts with a personal experience or idea, which can be expressed in single words or short sentences, as in the case of 'promises', and 'I'm not as green as I'm cabbage looking'.

Phair Photography

Time passes moment by moment but so quickly. When I look at my own children and realise the speed at which these moments have passed it reminds me why I became a photographer. Being able to capture an expression, record an emotion or crystallise a moment for someone with the help of a camera, is a joy.

Part of the pleasure is making sure that I understand what my clients would really like to see and helping them achieve it. I see each sitting as collaboration; and what transpires should be a pleasing reflection of the relationship between myself, and ultimately the aims of the client.
